3D Printer Being Used to Create New Bones

Engineers are pioneering the use of 3D printers, normally meant to make 3D metal parts, to make new bones and bone parts. The discovery is attributed to doubling the strength of the main ceramic powder (calcium phosphate) by adding silica and zinc oxide. The bone parts can be added to damaged bone to act as a scaffold for new cells, then ultimately dissolves with "no apparent ill-effects."

The technology doesn't stop at just aiding in regenerating bone. Mark Frame suggested using a CAT scanner to produce images of damaged bones. This information could then be fed into the 3D printer to create a model. This would help doctors create a plan for surgery before jumping in.
