A quiet coastal village, Sandbridge is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of touristy venues but conveniently located just minutes from all the activity of Virginia Beach. There are lots of activities and entertainment to be had in Sandbridge, Virginia.

The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Established in 1938, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is an isolated portion of the former Princess Anne County. It is today managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Visitor Contact Center is accessed by using Sandpiper Road from the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach.

Sandbridge is the southernmost area of development found on the Atlantic Coast of Virginia. The refuge here is a fresh water refuge sitting on 9,062 acres. It makes up a portion of Virginia’s Outer Banks and is a relaxing, beachy spot to visit.

Barrier Island, found in the refuge, features large sand dunes, fresh water marshes, maritime forests, ponds, wintering wildfowl areas, and ocean beach. Conservationists consider the refuge to be an important link along the Atlantic Flyway, making it a must-see spot for anyone who loves birds. In fact, the area lends itself to migratory birds and bird watchers.

Bush Gardens

Nearby in Williamsburg, Virginia is Bush Gardens by SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment. It’s the perfect stop for anyone seeking a little amusement park style fun. The park features an assortment of thrill rides, roller coasters, and water rides. Bush Gardens is the perfect way to keep the thrill seekers and kids in the crowd happy before sliding over to the quieter, slower pace of Sandbridge for a nice dinner and relaxing view of the sunset.

  • Aldo’s Ristorante: Fresh seafood and fine wine go hand-in-hand when in coastal Virginia. Aldo’s Ristorante, found near Sandbridge at Virginia Beach, is a must visit restaurant for those seeking class. Found on Laskin Road, you can make a reservation prior to dining or reserve the restaurant to host an event. The menu includes pasta, pizza, and a list of house favorites stocked with some of the best seafood in the area. The Italian flair is unmistakable, and Aldo’s features a hefty wine list.

  • The Boardwalk Restaurant: Found on Sandbridge Road in Virginia Beach, The Boardwalk Restaurant specializes in Asian and American foods. It’s a family-owned and operated business with the options to dine in, take out, and cater. The menu is extensive and family friend, especially for the kids.

  • Catch 31: Situated on Atlantic Avenue in Virginia Beach, Catch 31 is an award-winning restaurant near Sandbridge for the diner seeking the best in local seafood. It’s a prime gathering spot for a diverse crowd, and it has a lively nighttime environment. It’s the perfect dining attraction for those looking for a fun night out with great friends and great food.

  • Crazy Good Donuts and Ice Cream: You can’t have an awesome vacation without an epic treat, and Crazy Good Donuts and Ice Cream delivers! Located on Upton Drive in Virginia Beach, there’s nothing better than grabbing a tasty treat from this shop before or after a visit to Sandbridge Beach. They specialize in made-to-order donuts, premium soft serve and hard ice cream, an assortment of frozen yogurt, milkshakes, coffee, and tea. It’s also a great stop to beat the midday heat of the summer months by chilling out with some ice cream before heading back to the beach for more fun.

Ocean Breeze Water Park

Another nearby attraction is the Ocean Breeze Water Park. The park started with three mat slides and the distinction of being the only water park in Virginia Beach back in 1974. It has since grown to include more than 30 rides, slides, and various attractions designed to meet every visitor’s tastes.

You can relax by floating in the quarter-mile Adventure River. Turn up the find by tackling the monster slide complex at Neptune’s Revenge. Sit poolside with a funnel cake and enjoy people watching or the company of your favorite someone. You can even hop into the deep end of the park’s million-gallon wave pool to ride waves or chill in the shadow end.

Sandbridge Beach

Enjoy the pure simplicity of the ocean at Sandbridge Beach. The beach is roughly 4.5 miles long from north to south. Sometimes referred to as the Outer Banks of Virginia, Sandbridge is a laid-back spot to enjoy the beauty of the water, go for a swim, and sunbathe on the warm sand.

No hotels are located on the beach, but there is an assortment of condos and houses for rent. The beach is a major tourist attraction, yet it remains a quiet area with a slower pace in comparison to the hustle and bustle of Virginia Beach and the Boardwalk.

A few well-known features attract tourists and locals. The Sandbridge Market can be found at the north end of the beach. The Sandbridge “S Turns” are found half way down the beach where Sandpiper and Sandfiddler roads make an “S turn.” The S Turns is a popular area where locals like to hang out and surf.

The water is protected by the Virginia Beach EMS Lifeguard Division. Roughly four supervising lifeguards keep a constant eye on the waters with regular patrols where lifeguards are not permanently stationed. A total of four stands are also up kept at Market Place Beach, and another ten are found at Little Island Beach.

The activities and entertainment at and near Sandbridge are diverse. There really is something for everyone, which is why this area of Virginia Beach is just the right vacation spot for just about anyone.
