The Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Established in 1938, the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is an isolated portion of the former Princess Anne County. It is today managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Visitor Contact Center is accessed by using Sandpiper Road from the Sandbridge area of Virginia Beach.
Sandbridge is the southernmost area of development found on the Atlantic Coast of Virginia. The refuge here is a fresh water refuge sitting on 9,062 acres. It makes up a portion of Virginia’s Outer Banks and is a relaxing, beachy spot to visit.
Barrier Island, found in the refuge, features large sand dunes, fresh water marshes, maritime forests, ponds, wintering wildfowl areas, and ocean beach. Ocean Breeze Water Park
Another nearby attraction is the Ocean Breeze Water Park. The park started with three mat slides and the distinction of being the only water park in Virginia Beach back in 1974. Enjoy the pure simplicity of the ocean at Sandbridge Beach. The beach is roughly 4.5 miles long from north to south. Sometimes referred to as the Outer Banks of Virginia, Sandbridge is a laid-back spot to enjoy the beauty of the water, go for a swim, and sunbathe on the warm sand.
No hotels are located on the beach, but there is an assortment of condos and houses for rent. The beach is a major tourist attraction, yet it remains a quiet area with a slower pace in comparison to the hustle and bustle of Virginia Beach and the Boardwalk.
A few well-known features attract tourists and locals. The Sandbridge Market can be found at the north end of the beach. The Sandbridge “S Turns” are found half way down the beach where Sandpiper and Sandfiddler roads make an “S turn.” The S Turns is a popular area where locals like to hang out and surf.
The water is protected by the Virginia Beach EMS Lifeguard Division. Roughly four supervising lifeguards keep a constant eye on the waters with regular patrols where lifeguards are not permanently stationed. A total of four stands are also up kept at Market Place Beach, and another ten are found at Little Island Beach.
The activities and entertainment at and near Sandbridge are diverse. There really is something for everyone, which is why this area of Virginia Beach is just the right vacation spot for just about anyone.
