Welcome to Virginia Beach

Welcome, friends. We are so excited and happy to have you here. Virginia Beach is a lovely place to live, and with a booming tourist industry, it’s the perfect place to visit as well. So whether you’re looking to relocate permanently or simply take your ideal vacation, Blu Skyy Realty is here to show you what makes Virginia Beach rock!

A Little Bit about Virginia Beach

Virginia Beach is an independent city in the great state of Virginia with a population of approximately 448,479. A suburban setting with the highest volume of residents in the state of Virginia, the city ranks 39th nationwide in the country’s list of populous cities.

Situated in the southeastern region of the state, right next to the sea, the “beach” part of Virginia Beach is no lie. The city is situated on approximately 307 miles, which includes 248 miles of land, 59 miles of water, and of course, everyone’s favorite, 38 miles of luxurious beach. In fact, the Huffington Post named Virginia Beach one of the 11 best beaches on the East Coast!

A Brief History

Virginia Beach is the site where famed explorer John Smith first set foot on American soil. He and his crew had explored the area for several days before they decided to travel north, where they would colonize Jamestown.

In 1781, a French fleet of 24 ships managed to defend themselves from attacks by British ships off the coast of Cape Henry. The victory not only led to the capture of General Cornwallis and 7,500 enemy troops, but it also brought an end to the Revolutionary War.

The country’s first federally funded lighthouse was built soon after. It was named the Cape Henry Lighthouse in honor of this historical event. The edifice was in operation and guiding ships to the north until 1881 when it was replaced by a newer Cape Henry Lighthouse, which remains in operation today. Although no longer functioning as the beacon it once was, the original lighthouse still stands and can be visited by tourists.

One cannot discuss Virginia Beach history without taking a moment to highlight the Oceanfront Boardwalk. Originally built in 1888, this historic spot has been around to see many important events in American history, from Prohibition to big bands, to actors and even presidents. The Oceanfront Boardwalk has served as a venue for many of the biggest acts of the late 30s through the 50s, including Cab Calloway, Bing Crosby, Glenn Miller, Judy Garland, and others. To this day, it remains a hot spot for incoming tourists and visitors.

If you love rich history, Virginia Beach is the perfect place for you. Loaded with antiquity, many monuments of old can still be found standing. On any given day you can visit the home of Adam Thoroughgood, the Lynnhaven House, and the Francis Land House, which are all perfect spots to stopover for any vacationing history buffs. To top it all off, numerous programs are offered to give visitors an authentic early colonist experience.

Virginia Beach: The Perfect Spot For Families

If you are a family interested in relocation, or perhaps a couple wanting to start a family, look no further than Virginia Beach. It’s the perfect city for all the members of your household. Summers are packed with free entertainment, the beaches offer plenty of fun for children, and believe it or not, you even have “no swearing zones” to keep the surrounding atmosphere safe for little ears.

Virginia Beach is divided into the following boroughs: Kempsville, Bayside, Blackwater, Princess Anne, Lynnhaven, Pungo, and of course Virginia Beach. Some notable neighborhoods in the region include Alanton, Chesapeake Beach, Green Run, Red Mill Commons, just to name a few.

The crime rate is low here. Broken up into seven categories – some of which include robbery, assault, burglary, and automobile theft – each one is lower than the national average, and many of those subsections are nearly half the national average.

Virginia Beach City Public Schools is not only one of the biggest education systems in Virginia, but it also ranks within the top 50 largest school organizations in the country. While there is a strong public school system in the area, plenty of independent and private schools are available for your choosing, some of which include:

The Hebrew Academy of Tidewater
Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School
Norfolk Academy.

Once your children have grown and are ready to move on to higher learning, you will be happy to know there are two universities to choose from right on your home turf. They are Regent University (a graduate school with a recently created program for undergrads) and Atlantic University. Plenty of other college programs are located nearby, including satellite campuses for Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia, conveniently found in Virginia Beach.

A Home for the Military

If you’re in the military, you will fit in just fine in Virginia Beach. The city has a very strong military presence with 266,874 total Navy families. Their presence helps keep the economy strong while creating jobs in many other sectors.

The local economy is also supported by a high tourist presence. With so much to offer, it’s no wonder travelers flock to experience the natural beauty of Virginia Beach.
