Regardless of the season, there are always awesome things to do in Chesapeake, Virginia. Nestled behind the seaside cities of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Chesapeake is one of the Hampton Roads cities. It’s a diverse metropolis of urban areas and miles of protected forests, farmland, and wetlands. It houses a boatload of happenings throughout the year, and post-New Year’s Eve there is plenty to do!

Release Your Inner Fisher

What’s coastal living without a little fishing? Although Chesapeake itself isn’t on the coast, its location makes it a prime place to fish.

Fishing can be a great stress reliever, for both the fisher and the significant other who gets a morning to themselves. Hosted by the Bill Wills SE Virginia Chapter of Trout Unlimited, their workshop teaches the basics of fly-fishing. Admission is free, and no experience or gear is necessary.

According to VisitChesapeake.com, the workshop is a scheduled monthly event from January through March. Visit their website for event details.

Get Back to Nature (at Night)

Located within Chesapeake is the Northwest River Park and Campground. There’s no better place to get reacquainted with nature, and the park houses an array of events. One of those events is the unique experience of discovering the nocturnal side of nature.

Starting at 7:00 PM, a park naturalist will take you on a 2.5 mile guided hike. Admission for 2015 is $4 per person, and you’ll need to contact Shawn Callahan to reserve a spot. According their event calendar, tours are currently scheduled for January 9, 2015 and February 13, 2015. It could be a fun day-before-Valentine’s adventure to share with that special someone, or a fun time to be had with the kids who are determined to stay up late.

Remember What’s Above at Skywatch

When did you last pause and look up at the night sky? Starting January 10th, Skywatch at Northwest River Park will run from sunset to 11:00 PM. You’ll have the opportunity to join the Back Bay Amateur Astronomers in an eye opening look at the stars through their scopes, guided by their expertise.

Admission is free, and the event is open to the public. Weather permitting; it will take place in the Equestrian area of Northwest River Park. It’s currently scheduled on January 10th and February 14th. If you’re looking for a romantic touch to Valentine’s Day, what better way than topping off a romantic dinner with stargazing at Skywatch?

Kick Start Your Health & Fitness

Are you making a New Year’s resolution to get in shape, shed those extra pounds, or adapt a healthier lifestyle? Why not make this the year you stick to it?

The 2nd Annual Health and Fitness Expo will be hosted at the Wingate by Wyndham on Saturday, January 24, 2015. The Expo brings all walks of life of health and fitness together for a fun filled day of demos, games, prizes, and priceless information from some of the top fitness gurus in Hampton Roads.

The event is predicted to raffle and demo roughly $1,000 worth of top-level health and fitness product. It is an ideal event for health seekers. You can view the complete event details and ticket information on the Expo’s website.

Dance Like There’s No Tomorrow

There’s nothing as refreshing and exciting as a good old bluegrass throw down. It gets feet tapping, hands clapping, and people dancing like no other music genre. On February 28, 2015, the Tidewater Bluegrass Music Association (TBMA) Monthly Bluegrass Concert will be held at the Hickory Ruritan Club.

The TBMA concert features an assortment of the best in local and regional bluegrass talent. February’s scheduled event will feature music by Ream’s Station. Instead of charging a set admission fee, donations will be accepted at the door and used to cover the cost of both the bands and rental. It’s a family friendly, fun-filled event that is sure to be a blast. View full details and more upcoming events on the TBMA website.

There are lots of awesome things to do in Chesapeake whether you’re a local resident or visitor. Be sure to check the event calendar at VisitChesapeake.com for more fun-filled, local happenings. If you don’t already call Chesapeake home, you just might find reason to!
